Seriously! I'm done with fiat as a unit of account.

The other day I was looking at my 401k performance as it is entirely invested in SPY (S&P 500 Index) and saw that I had a 10% YTD gain. So, I was feeling good about that. However, I also noticed at the beginning of the year 1 Euro was equal to $1.03, but was equivalent to $1.16 this week. That's a loss of about 13%. Not just the Euro, but other major currencies, like GBP and CHF had strengthened against the dollar. So my "10% gain" was actually a 3% loss when measured in terms of global wealth. WTF! That woke me up!

The solution. I'm going to start using gold as my baseline unit of measure starting today. 1kg of gold is about $109k. My net worth and savings will be measured in kilograms of gold. This will conservatively tell me if I'm getting ahead or falling behind in my financial goals. No more USD.
